Hamburger Energiewerke becomes new major shareholder in ane.energy

Wednesday, October 4, 2023

After an M&A process lasting around one and a half years, the new majority shareholder has been confirmed: Hamburger Energiewerke is acquiring a 50.1 percent stake in the direct marketer ane.energy. The supervisory boards of both companies and the Court of Auditors of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg have already given their approval; the European antitrust authority's approval is expected shortly.

With the capital increase resulting from this investment, Husum-based ane.energy, which specializes in digitalization and marketing of renewable energies, is positioning itself strongly for the future. "The 2022 financial year was by far the most successful," explains Managing Director Ralf Höper. "However, the planned expansion of our PPA business, combined with the continued high and volatile forward market prices, requires an even more robust capital base to be able to provide the necessary collateral."

For ane.energy, the selection criteria included not only financial aspects but also strategic alignment and regional connection. The selection was also favored by the fact that both companies already know each other from joint projects in Northern Germany: ane.energy already supports HEnW in short-term energy trading and ensures access to the power exchange.

For the future, the partners will examine the extent to which further optimization of joint trading and sales activities, the integration of HEnW facilities into ane.energy's Virtual Power Plant, and collaboration on future topics such as sector coupling and hydrogen is possible.

This is also confirmed by Christian Heine, spokesman for the management of Hamburger Energiewerke: "ane.energy is an ideal partner for us. We will invest around 1.9 billion euros in the energy and heat transition of the Hanseatic city by 2027. This includes numerous large heat pumps as well as sector coupling projects with a high demand for green electricity. At the same time, we will significantly expand our own renewable portfolio."
