Press Release: ane.energy develops first Utility Power Purchase Agreement for a municipal utility
Thursday, February 6, 2025
"LüttRegioWATT" – that's the name of the electricity product that private and commercial customers of Stadtwerke Neustadt in Holstein have been able to purchase since the beginning of 2025. The electricity comes from an Enercon E66 wind turbine located just a few kilometers north. It has an installed capacity of 1.8 megawatts and is expected to produce around 2.6 million kilowatt hours annually. This can theoretically supply about 1,000 Neustadt households with renewable electricity.
City and municipal utilities wanted sustainability and regionality
For the municipal utilities, it was important to find a facility in the surrounding area to support climate protection, local sustainable development, and regional value creation. "Every kilowatt hour that we generate and consume locally is a positive contribution to the energy transition and promotes the regional economy," emphasizes Dirk Heckmann, Sales Manager of Stadtwerke Neustadt in Holstein.
ane.energy develops customized project
ane.energy found the right partner in Dieter Knoll, the operator of the facility. The wind turbine had come out of the EEG subsidy program at the beginning of 2024 and had initially been in other direct marketing for a year. Since the beginning of 2025, the Utility PPA has been in operation.
For the experienced green electricity trader and direct marketer, this is a forward-looking project: "From our perspective, municipal utilities are not yet fully utilizing the potential of PPAs," explains Phillip Fritz, Project Manager at ane.energy. "While PPAs are in high demand from industrial companies, smaller and medium-sized energy suppliers are not yet exploiting the possibilities for their business models and product portfolios."
High demand for wind power product
Shortly after the launch of the wind power product in Neustadt, there was great interest from customers. Since there were some out-of-area customers, the municipal utilities have already quickly expanded the offering to include the "HolsteinRegioStrom" tariff.
